Urban area, marsh and Elbe meet in Wedel in a unique way. The project exploits this situation by bringing transit and interface zones to the fore as public spaces so as to render rural and urban contrasts a vivid experience to the eye. The foot of the Geesthang is repressed in order to create a clear urbanistic outline. By this means, the fanlike and linear building of the Wedel Terraces secures, via sight-lines and routed paths, the connection between the Elbe and the urban quarter. The open row structure of the embankment halls connects the marsh landscape with the bank of the Elbe. Harbour and leisure-orientated facilities generate, facing the Elbe's tidal current, a maritime milieu. With the Wedel Terraces at Geesthang, Ladiges Park, the harbour-head and the embankment halls in the marsh, new attractions in the form of buildings arise that could develop into a variety-rich, maritime mile. The element linking them all is the Elbe Promenade.
