The group of buildings comprising the Reventlow Foundation was built in the late 19th century. The City of Hamburg wanted to integrate this historical ensemble into a project designed to combine senior-citizen housing and a nursing home on the same property. The Hamburg Department for the Preservation of Monuments wanted to restore and remodel the existing houses and utilize them as dwellings for senior citizens.
Me di um’s urban design concept consisted of replacing those buildings unfit for economic restoration with new constructions. The new buildings had to be integrated into the master plan of the historical ensemble. The idea was not only to restore each individual building, but to repair the urban structure as well. To achieve this aim, the architects were convinced that the new buildings had to conform with their historical neighbors both in materials and colors. Following these premises, a harmoniously-integrated whole complex came into being.
