Eulenkrugstrasse, Hamburg-Volksdorf

completion 2003

Until 1995, Eulenkrugstrasse school consisted of three provisional school pavilions.
Taking into consideration the increasing number of pupils, four classroom buildings, a gym doubling as a multi-purpose hall, and a caretaker’s residence were built as the first step in the project. The task was to define a spatial situation with little volume that would allow the school’s identity to evolve while catering for the possible necessity of additional enlargement in the future.
The multi-purpose hall was positioned in such a way that, in co-action with the northern pavilion, access to the playground was created. Attached to the hall on the east side, single-story changing-rooms with a polygonal floor-plan run eastwards to form the beginnings of an enclosure of the playground which will be completed by the sickle-shaped formation of the two-story classrooms.

In 2003, the school was enlarged by the addition of four more classrooms, thus extending the envisaged semi-circle by a quarter segment.
