FACADE RESTORATION BEFITTING A HISTORIC MONUMENT
TOWN HOUSE HAYNSTRASSE 1-3 / HEGESTRASSE 41, HAMBURG - EPPENDORF

Completion Date: 2010
In co-operation with Stefan Matthay, Architect

Commendation
"Hamburg's most beautiful facade, 2010"
Laudatory recognition accompanying the Facade Prize of the State Guild of Building Restorers of Hamburg and the Historical Monument Preservation Department of Hamburg.

In the programme of events for the listed building's open day in September 2010, when the residents of the corner building Hayn- / Hegestrasse open the doors of their 'upper-bourgeois town-house' to the interested public, the accompanying text will be presented as follows:

"Built in 1910 by Johann Georg Hupach for speculative purposes, the town house represents the upmarket residential life-style in the aspiring suburb of Eppendorf. Both the interior and exterior of the listed corner building captivate the beholder with their high-quality of architectonic and decorative workmanship in the Art Nouveau language of form. Haynstrasse 1 has been famous since 1970 because its student residents preserved the house from demolition, founded a tenants' association and fought successfully for their rights. "

.After a construction period lasting for more than two years, a historically befitting and effective restoration of the facade was completed in January 2010 that allows the imposing corner building to radiate with new lustre. With the advice and co-operation of the Historical Monument Preservation Department, an exemplary refurbishment operation was carried out that can without doubt be described as a model for the treatment of our other listed buildings. This comes especially at a time when, following the 'primacy of cost-effectiveness' mantra, whatever is beautiful and well-made is considered of little value and private interests have priority over social rights and needs.
